I never thought I'd be here

                     Updated photos of Debbie Soule

UPDATE!  She has married and is also going by the name  DEB FITZGERALD

Before I begin, I wanted to urge you to go to the blog archive on the right and begin reading Nick's story from the beginning where I began in 2013.  I started this so everyone will know what Deborah Soule did,  how she viciously beat to death and murdered a sleeping two year old boy.

Deborah Soule's maiden name is Debbie Barbas and she is from Brockport NY.  She now works at Hudson Link in Ossining NY but travels often to Brockport NY.  Reading through the transcripts, Deborah blames Nick's murder on many things, one of which is the abuse she endured as child by her father.  She further states that her mother did nothing about the abuse. She goes on to victim blame Nicholas himself, stating that he was delayed (he absolutely was not) and had some abnormally high tolerance for pain (which is also a lie). Debbie also states that Nick did not cry out during the attack.  Which is absurd.  God knows he did, Debbie, you know he did and so does your daughter, let's not forget she saw the whole thing.  Yes I am bitter, I will never get over this, but one thing you have wrong is telling people I am lying...you are the liar.  You are the manipulator and you are the evil murderer.   I hope you enjoy what you can in this life because I know you will rot in hell.    For people who you try to convince you simply "snapped" one night.  That is not true, you abused Nick for months and tried to blame it on your daughters, just like you tried to blame Nick's death on them as well.  I will never be quiet, I am not going anywhere.  I will forever be Nick's voice and make sure everyone knows what a monster you are.

Here is the last transcript if you can stomach it.

The monster has been released

I am still trying to adjust to Deborah Soule's release from prison.  I apologize for my lack of words as this has been a difficult time for me and my family.  Deborah Soule was released into Queens NY.  I wanted to share a podcast that my sisters Patty and Michele did.  I want to thank them for doing what I could not do and thank the "Mourning the Murdered podcast" for caring about Nicholas and helping his voice be heard.

The monster is being released

I was contacted a week before Christmas that instead of having her parole hearing in September 2021,  Deborah Soule (maiden name Deborah Barbas) was receiving a new parole hearing ASAP.  I found out she is now being released at the beginning of March.  I will update with more information soon.

I am so Grateful for all of you!

Deborah Soule's parole was denied!  Her next parole hearing date is September 2021.  I am sorry it has taken so long to update everyone, but I took a step back to take a deep breathe and relax for a little bit.  I was so afraid she was going to be released this time and as much as I try for it to not, it really does affect my everyday life.  For months I have worried (and that is putting it mildly).  I would try to imagine how life would be if she was released from prison and I can not get past the fact that it would just be so wrong if she was free.  No amount of time in prison could ever be enough to make up for what she did to Nick.  Her being in prison is the only solace I have. But I wanted to thank all of you for caring about Nick, and helping me and my family as we go through this time after time.  I have read every signature and every comment on the petition, and I am deeply grateful for each and every one of you.

January 2019 means another year of facing possible parole.

Yesterday was 24 years since Nick was murdered by Deborah Soule.  That is 8779 days since I have been able to see or hold my son.  When I write that now, it seems like such a long time.  But in my mind it will always feel like yesterday.  No amount of time can take away what she did to Nicholas.  He was a person, his life mattered.  What she made him endure is unimaginable.  It breaks me to think of  what she did to him, how scared he must have been and he endured it alone. Deborah goes out of her way to not talk about what she did.  As does her family.  They  try to hide it and that sickens me. I have been in touch with people who have been close to her, some have even been in prison with her.  They all say the same thing, she never has even mentioned Nick's name.  Nick would be 26 now.  So many what if's.  So many could of's.  I have no hope of ever watching him get married.  I have no hope of holding his children. I never got to watch him grow up into a man.   I like to think he would be a husband and father now.  I try to imagine what he would look like, but all I will ever have is a dream.   I read through all of the parole transcripts yesterday, and you know what Deborah Soule has?  She has hope of getting out.  Getting out to be with her daughters and to be able to hold her grandchildren.   She portrays herself as someone who just snapped one day and that simply isn't true.  She abused Nick for months.  She is the worse kind of evil, she preys on the weak and the innocent.  The ones who can't fight back.  Well this Momma can and will fight back.  EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.  I will not "move on" and  I will not "get over it".  Not Ever.  Deborah Soule goes up for parole again later this year.  Please help me be Nick's voice and sign the petition against her release.  Here is the link for the petition 2019 Petition  A letter to the Parole Board will also help greatly.  Here is the link to the Parole Board for letters Letter to Parole Board  Please use her DIN # 96G0391.  Thank you all for your kindness and support.  Together we can be Nick's voice and stand up against this monster.

Parole was denied!

Last week I received the news that Deborah Soule's parole was denied.  She will go before the parole board again in September of 2019.  Thank you all for standing with me to be Nick's voice!  This time around was harder, not just for me, but my whole family.  The wait was awful.  But I am willing to continue to do this, if it means that monster stays behind bars where she belongs.  It is nothing compared to what she made my son endure. Deborah Soule truly has no remorse.  These last several months have been eye opening for me. I have found support in some unexpected places, and for that I am truly grateful.  There is no final "closure" to be had here.  The pain she has caused in so many lives is immeasurable.  Many people have reached out to me.  Even some who have been incarcerated with Debbie over the years.  They all have said the same thing to me.  That Deborah Soule could care less about what she did to Nick.  She continues to lie and manipulate and tries to act like she has done nothing wrong, like Nick never existed. But he did, and she beat him to death in a fit of jealousy after abusing him for months then sat by and let him suffer for hours.  My family and I will NEVER let him or what she did be forgotten.  EVER.

Thank you all so much for your signatures and letters of support.  Together, we are Nick's voice!

Such an outpouring of love and support!

When I was young, all I wanted to be when I grew up was a mom.  It took me a long time to even be able to share that with people, because these days we are all supposed to reach for the stars and aspire to be doctors or lawyers.  But me, all I wanted was a family and to be happy.  I was so excited when I learned we were pregnant for Nick, we were young, but we were going to make it.  I never dreamed any of this would happen to my son.  NEVER.  There is such a fine line I have to try and walk, between my past and present.  I stumble and fall, but you all help me get back up again.  You all help make it that much more bearable.  I can not thank you all enough for signing and sharing our petition.  Many of you have reached out to me with such love and kindness.  I really believe it is important to try and find the light, no matter how dark things may seem, well this is my light.  To see that there are so many good people out there, that care for my Nicholas.  We now have over 7,000 signatures, over 7,000 people have
banded together to be Nick's voice, and for that I am truly grateful.

Below is the slide show my sister Faith made for the Parole Board.

We are Nick's voice!!

22 years ago, through no choice of my own, I was given a life sentence.  Deborah Soule beat my two year old son Nicholas Miller while he slept.  Hours later, he would die from his injuries.  Denied of his chance to grow and live his life.  Still today, through no choice of my own, I am faced with having to convince a twelve person panel that my son's life was worth having the monster who beat him to death remain in prison.  Every two years I have to face this....and that is if I am lucky.  I have to relive it over and over again for the rest my life.  There is no comfort in that.  It is a broken record set on repeat, over and over again.  I know life isn't fair, but this is cruel.  Where was my right to watch my son grow?  Where was his right to life?  Why do the rights of murderers seem to come first?  To some of you, Nicholas is just a story, but to me, he was my son.  I carried him inside of me for 9 months, I gave birth to him, I fed him, changed him, played with him, I ADORED that boy. Nick was so full of love, always there with a hug and a smile.  He was just starting to talk well and his personality was really starting to shine, but Deborah Soule snuffed that all out.

All I ask is for you to take just a minute and ask yourself how would you feel if you were handed the same fate and faced the same future?  Your innocent child senselessly and brutally beaten while they slept, left to suffer and simply allowed to die.  To this day, she denies responsibility for her actions.  She is full of nothing but manipulation, lies and deceit.

Please take a moment to sign our petition to keep Deborah Soule in prison.  It would also be a great help if  you could write a letter to the NYS parole Board requesting that she be denied parole.  Just click on this link, it only takes a minute of your time. http://www.doccs.ny.gov/letters.html

Together we can be Nick's voice!

Received second parole transcript

Do you want to know who I have the most admiration for?  Parents who can forgive the monsters who have murdered their children.  It is a place I would very much like to get to, but I don't know that I can.  I have waited twenty one years to hear what Deborah Soule had to say about the day she viciously beat my little boy.  Twenty one years!  But still there is NO explaination.  NONE.  Her first time up for parole it was "He was just there"  this time it was nothing but excuses and lies.  LIES.  I am just angered more than ever.  Where can you find solice in lies?  She also tries to play victim, like it was so tramatic for her.  Deborah Soule, you will get yours, if not in this lifetime, then in the next. You seem to have forgotten quite a bit in just the few months between parole hearings, well here is a little refresher for you...FACT....you broke up a family. You cheated with MY husband.  Then you for whatever reason didn't like Nicholas.  It was pure jealousy plain and simple.  You abused him for MONTHS.  You fractured his skull in November, bruised his ear, left many bruises and scratches all over his body.  You tormented him when ever you got the chance.  A TWO YEAR OLD BABY BOY.  Then, after Randy spent the entire day with Nick and I on Friday, January 13, 1995 talking about reuniting our family you couldn't handle it and the minute you were able, the minute you thought no one was watching you viciously and mercilessly beat my son, a two year old baby and watched him suffer with ZERO remorse.  All over a man. Is this a reminder enough for you?  Does it all ring a bell now?  You are not the victim Deborah Soule.  My two year old son is.

Deborah Soule's parole was DENIED AGAIN!!

I am so thankful the NYS Parole Board denied Deborah Soule's parole again.  I know I have said it before, but having to do this twice in one year has been really hard on me and my family.  For now I will enjoy this victory for Nick, but in two years I will be there again fighting that monster's release.  Nick deserves justice and our children need to be kept safe from that monster I am so grateful she is staying behind bars where she belongs.

We received 2645 signatures on our petition on Change.org and many letters to the Parole Board. Every single one helped. I could not have done this alone, Thank you all so much for helping me be Nick's voice.  <3

Reliving the Nightmare

Aaron Curtis did a great job writing this article for the Daily Messenger. I hope someday soon NYS passes the law to extend the parole hearings to every five years instead of two.  Victims lives matter too.

Parole again in September....

Deborah Soule is up for parole again in September, please take the time to read and sign our petition. One of the things the Parole Board noted when they denied her parole in March was the strong community opposition to her release. Together we can be Nick's voice.

Every prayer, letter and signature matters.  Thank you all for your kindness and support, it does mean so much to my family and I.

Received the Parole Hearing Transcript yesterday....

I carry Nick with me everyday. His murder is always just below the surface for me.  It doesn't take much to scratch it open.  Sometimes its looking at his pictures, or hearing a song come on the radio.  Every day it is an effort to try and not focus on what happened to him, but rather on the bright and shiny little boy that he was.  I say over and over to myself "Focus on what you do have, Focus on the good."  Today all I can think is " But there is an awful lot you don't have, an awful lot you wont ever have".  I didn't get to watch him grow, I wont ever hold him, or know how it feels to hold my grandchildren. NEVER. No matter what I do, I will never have the one thing I long for.  This was the first time I have ever heard what Deborah Soule had to say about her actions that have so profoundly affected my life.  I can't get Deborah Soule's words out of my head.  "He was just there....."  That is her explanation.  After twenty years, THAT is why.  It just infuriates me. That monster has no concept of what she did to my son.  The most emotion she had at her entire parole hearing was when she said how she "was very moved" that her son-in-law wrote a letter of recommendation. That woman is pure evil, and disgusting. All she ever thinks about is herself.

I think the most truth about what happened that night, lays in what an inmate who was housed with Deborah Soule said.  She stated that Debbie told her (this is documented in the presentence investigation report and a Parole Commissioner quoted it during her hearing) that .Randy and Debbie had a fight.  Randy left.  Nick wouldn't stop crying, so she told him to shut up and go to sleep.  Then she went into the room and kicked and kneed him and then left him to cry himself to sleep.   Reading those words and knowing that is what happened, hurts me so deep I can't even find words to describe. He was beaten, scared, and left alone.  While my son lay slowly dying on the floor, she was having sex in the next room with his father.  It all is just so sick.  If that isn't pure evil, I don't know what is.

Please, click on the link below to write a letter to the Parole Board to keep her in prison where she belongs. She goes up for parole AGAIN in September of 2015.  The fact that my family and I have to do this yet AGAIN is completely unfair.  Twice in one year, because Deborah Soule has rights, is totally ridiculous.

And we keep fighting the fight

I received news this morning that Deborah Soule's early release for parole was DENIED.  Thank God, and thank you to everyone who helped make that happen.  Whether you took the time to write a letter or  kept us in your prayers, I really believe every bit helped.  The waiting was the hardest part.  Now I can breathe a little easier, at least in the short term.  Now she has a right to her original parole hearing in September 2015. We have to go through this all over again.  It gets very discouraging that Deborah Soule has a right to all this, and my family and I are stuck on this emotional roller coaster.  But I will fight, I will always fight for Nicholas to keep her behind bars where she belongs.

I just found out on January 13, 2015 that Deborah Soule is going up for parole the week of March 9th instead of in September. She has received limited credit time by completing some course, this enables her to possibly be released in July. I go speak before the Parole Board in early February. This leaves me with almost no time to prepare. So I am asking everyone to PLEASE write letters to the Parole Board. I am not ready to live in a world where that monster is free. Since I have been left with so little time to prepare, please use the link below Deborah Soule's picture to submit your letters directly to the Parole Board.

Why I’m here…

On October 19, 1992 I was blessed to become a mother for the first time. At 11:23 pm, after an extremely long and hard labor, I finally got to meet my son Nicholas. At ten pounds, seven ounces, and twenty-two and a half inches long, he was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen.  His dark hair and blue eyes, I was in love. I had never felt anything like it before, it was the most powerful thing I had ever experienced. My whole life changed, and there was nothing I loved more than being his mom.

Little did I know that 27 short months later all that would come crumbling down around me.  What a parent thinks could never happen, happened.  It happened to my baby boy.  He was brutally beaten by my ex-husband's girlfriend Deborah Soule and died on January 14, 1995.  Fast forward 20 years later and the 21 years to life sentence Deborah Soule (her maiden name is Deborah Barbas) received doesn't seem very long at all.  Her parole hearing is tentatively scheduled for September 2015, less than a year away. She is looking at possibly being paroled in January 2016.  I will fight her release with everything I have, and I want the world to know what she did to my son, what a monster she truly is.

Through the years

Lately I realized that people don't know (or don't remember) what happened to Nicholas. For those of you who don't know, his name is Nicholas Christian Miller.  He was my blonde haired, blue eyed baby boy.  At only two years old, he had the biggest personality, and a smile that could light up the darkest of days.  I simply  adored him. Thinking about him, literally takes my breath away.  A mother's broken heart never mends.  Most days it is hard to let myself remember just how he made me feel. It makes my heart ache, not just emotionally but physically as well.  I have found that as a parent, each one of our children has their own special spot in our hearts, their own little way they make us feel inside.  It is a feeling of  such indescribable love and joy it is hard to put into words. Then to have those feelings and no child to hold, well that is whole different realm of hell no parent should have to live through.  Especially at the hands of another human being.  There are such strong emotions attached to it, that if I let my self 'go there' all the time, I would not be able to function on a daily basis.

Deborah Soule, took all that away from me.  She ripped Nicholas right out of my arms...and for what?  jealousy?   I just could never understand it.  I still don't have any real answers about what happened that night.  Randy Miller (Nick's father and my ex-husband) was never very forthcoming about it and Deborah was just trying to save her herself. So I have been left alone trying to make sense out of nonsense. It took YEARS to accept the fact that I am just never going to understand what happened that night.  For so long I wanted answers from Randy and Debbie, but now I know, and I have resigned to the fact that I will never get them.

Leading up to 'that night'

On Father’s day weekend 1994 Randy (my husband of barely two years) left Nick and I.  It came as a complete shock to me.  He had been my high school sweetheart, my best friend.  The only thing that had been wrong in our relationship was that he had been out all night the weekend before…come to find out later, he was with Deborah Soule.  He moved in with Debbie and her two children immediately.  I was devastated.  But I moved on and into my sister Celeste’s house with Nicholas until we got settled into our own place.  I signed up for college and signed Nick up for day care at FLCC.  I was going to do what I had to do to give my son the best life I could.  Nick had a hard time adjusting to being away from me, but after a while he started to like being in day care, and I have to say, I was very hesitant to leave him there.  I heard a lot of horror stories about abuse in day care settings and it really scared me, but they took wonderful care of him.   We were quite happy, and I look back at this time as one of the happiest in my life.

I had talked to Randy repeatedly about not leaving Nick alone with Debbie. I did not know her well, and when Nick was there, he was there to visit his father, not Debbie.  I told Randy if he had to work on his weekend with Nick, just let me know, I would keep him and he could have him the next weekend.  If Nick cried and wanted me during the night...call me, I would come get him any time, day or night.  Randy agreed to all this, but never called.  He did skip his visitation often, looking back I am thankful for that.  At the time though it broke my heart because Nick loved his dad.  Every white car he would see he would point to and say "daddy's kuck, daddy's kuck."

In November, around Thanksgiving time, Randy dropped Nick off at my house.  I noticed immediately a little scratch on his cheek, but didn’t think much about it.  It was later when I changed his diaper that I noticed little scratches and digs in his diaper area, other little bruises in various places and his entire right ear was bruised.  So I took him to the ER, where I was treated like the jealous ex-wife and sent home.  They did report it to CPS because I had requested it.  Over the next couple of days I noticed the temple area above his  ear starting to swell (you can see this in some of the pictures I have posted on here).  This time I took him to the Doctors and was told it was ‘cat scratch disease’ so Nick was put on an antibiotic.  That was all fine and good, except at that time I did not own a cat,  but once again the Doctor would not listen to me.  (I was later told after Nick died that injury was most likely a fractured skull.)  Social Services claims to have investigated, but didn’t listen to me or the day care center.  While one of the girls at the day care center changed Nick’s diaper he pointed to the scratches and said “Debbie boo-boo”.   It was very frustrating when I was told I had to send Nick back over there or I would be arrested.  Social Services took total control over my son, and in the end were not held accountable in any way for his murder.

The day that changed me forever...

Friday, January 13, 1995.  Nicholas only had a few visitations with Randy since the November incident.  I remember Randy came to my apartment early to pick up Nick.  He ended up staying most of the day, and talked to me about getting back together.  I don't remember the exact plans that were made, but when he left I was happy at the prospect of having my family back.  I asked Randy to not take Nick because I didn't want him to be around all the fighting that would probably take place, but Randy assured me there wouldn't be any fighting.  That it would be just he and Nick.  He was going to take Nick to Chuckie Cheese and do things with just the two of them.  So he took him.....

The biggest regret of my entire life....I wish I never let him go....

I don't know, I think it was around 11:00 am or noon on Saturday morning, my time frame gets a bit jumbled.  There was a  knock at my door.  It was Randy with Nick.  Nick was sick and throwing up so Randy thought Nick should be home with me.  I looked at Nick and saw a red mark on his forehead.  My immediate thought was something happened to him, I knew you threw up with internal injuries...so I asked Randy what happened to Nick, and what the mark on his forehead was from.  He said Nick had a temper tantrum and rubbed his face in the carpet, he had seen this himself.  Then I asked if he was sure.  Had he left Nick alone at all?  Even to take a shower?  He responded by telling me "I was with him the whole time Katie, he even slept with me the whole night".  So I called the Dr, told him everything, even about the mark on his head, and he thought Nick just had a flu bug.  So I took care of Nick like he had a bug.  I tried to keep him hydrated...he kept throwing up.  His fever kept going up and up.  Then about 5:00 pm his fever spiked up to almost 105.  I started to panic and immediately took him to the ER.  I remember being scared driving down Dansville hill.  I kept looking back at him in his car seat to make sure he was ok.  When we got to the ER believe it or not, we had to sit in the waiting room.  Again I told the nurses what had happened, that he had been with his dad the night before, the mark on his head, the fever, the throwing up.  I remember them looking at me funny.  Finally they took him to a room, I absolutely have no idea how long that took.  Sometime in all of this Randy showed up at the ER, I never told him I was going there, so I don't really know how he knew that's where I was.  But they put an oximeter on his finger and his oxygen was 90.  He was laying in the hospital bed in just his diaper, and the side was up.  He grabbed the rail and kind of rolled on his side and said 'oooowwww'.  So I went to the nurse and told her "something is really hurting him".  Then a nurse came in to draw his blood.  I was stroking his hair and talking to him so he wouldn't see the needle and maybe it wouldn't hurt so much, then for a second I looked away...it seemed like the three of us all looked away at the same time.  Maybe it was just me, I don't know, but when we looked back at Nick, he was gone.  His pupils were dilated.  Randy put his hand in front of his face and said "Nicholas", then I said Nicholas.  The nurse must of coded, because next thing I remember I was in the hall, almost in the storage closet.  The next memory I have I see myself, I see myself drop to my knees and wail something.  Then a nurse told me I was making a scene and scaring the other patients and they took Randy and I to the hospital library.   I was left to pray.  At one point Randy asked me to pray out loud so he could pray too.  I can't even begin to describe the absolute horror it was.  During this time I managed to call my mom hysterically. I remember yelling at her over the phone to come to the hospital.  I remember a nurse coming in to tell me they were breathing for him and trying to get him stable to transport him to Strong.   Then next thing I know mom, dad, and Greg were in the library with us.  I remember mom telling me maybe if Nick heard my voice maybe it would help.  So I marched to the room where he was, past all the nurses, no one was going to stop me.  I went through door.  I saw a nurse look at me with a horrible look on her face, and Dr.  Depra saying "no it's OK, let her in".  He told me Nick was dead, and asked if I wanted to hold him. I said yes.  My memory is very spotty but they must have disconnected his breathing tube and everything else, he had a sheet on and they put him in my arms and I just held him.  I held him for hours. I remember looking up in the doorway and seeing my little brother, and the look on his face.  All my sisters came, as did a couple family friends, like Beth Yohon and Carole and Al Kuhne, my grandma and Ray we all held him.  I remember Father Ventura coming and I asked him 'why did this happen' and he just looked at me.  I don't know, if there is hell on earth this certainly is it.  I remember feeling like I could never be happy again and I went into shock....and for months I was just on autopilot....

No one knew what happened.  Dr. Depra said maybe it was meningitis.  I heard Debbie called the hospital.  I don't know why, or how she even knew we were there.  Then the Livingston County police came.  They separated Randy and I to talk.  I didn't realize what was going on.  They talked to me then left me alone, but they took a really long time talking to Randy.  I walked by the room and heard Randy tell them he was with Nick the whole night.  I didn't know at that time but looking back they thought he was responsible for what happened to Nick.  I didn't leave the hospital until 2:00 am.  By far, the hardest thing I have ever had to do was to leave my child at the hospital. I would never get to see or hold my Nicholas again.
